Ernest Lynn Buckley (1924-1989), a picture of my late dad for Father’s Day.

I like this picture of my dad because it’s from a time before his life had any real definitions. He was still figuring it out — what it meant to be a man in the world. At this point he was working in the CCC’s, I think.

By the time I was born, 15 or so years later, the last of four children, he seemed already set, like concrete. So my memory of him is less fluid than I think he probably actually was.

I think he was always trying to be as definite as possible, as an example to me, but paradoxically what I learned from his rigidity was to stay in the question.

Had he lived long enough I think he would probably be back to the question too. He pretty much was already on his way towards that state when he died at 65, after a long trip to China and a short bout with lung cancer. I think his travels, along with his declining health, made him reevaluate and become more curious about other points of view.

The last time I saw him, before he was in a hospital bed dying, he was much more at ease, relaxed, philosophical than I ever remembered him. He even seemed a little bewildered, i think, that nothing’s ever really definite.

This is an excerpt from a long epic poem he wrote about his life, when he was in his 40’s (I think), trying to make sense of it all. This particular section of the poem references that period of time when this picture of him was taken.

“I shall never forget the first mountain range

Seen rearing in distant blue

Or the sweep of the broad surging ocean

As endless as the plains that I knew

And the bright-lit, thundering cities

With names that once were but words

Or maps or in geography and history books

And in exciting stories I’d head.

Sometimes I would pause and ask of myself,

‘How can this actually be?

How came it to pass that now I am here

With the wonders of the world to see?’

Though years have gone by and travel afar

Has come to be commonplace,

There’s still to be found youthful excitement

At prospect of new worlds to face.”
